Patan has a stronger craft tradition than anywhere else in the Valley. The city has been known for metalwork — bronze casting in particular — for over a thousand years. Today the workshops around Durbar Square and the streets to the north are the best place in Nepal to buy bronze statuary, ritual objects, and thangka paintings. Quality and prices vary enormously; buying directly from workshops is better than buying from the tourist shops on the main square.
