Arch of Triumph

Pyongyang's monumental triumphal arch, built on a scale larger than its Paris namesake.

Pyongyang's Arch of Triumph is one of the city's clearest statements of monumental state architecture. Built in white granite, it commemorates Korean resistance to Japanese rule and deliberately echoes the form of the Arc de Triomphe while exceeding it in height.

Visits depend on the structure of an approved itinerary, as with most Pyongyang sights. Even from outside, the arch is useful for understanding how the capital stages history in grand axial spaces, with sculpture, scale, and symbolism doing much of the interpretive work.
