Things to Do

All sightseeing in Pyongyang is guided — visitors move with minders who determine the itinerary, and unsupervised wandering is not permitted. Within these constraints, the city's monuments, museums, and public spaces offer a genuinely unusual travel experience, unlike anything else in the world.

The standard tour circuit covers the Mansudae Grand Monument (the giant statues of the Kims), Kim Il-sung Square, the Juche Tower observatory, the Victorious Fatherland Liberation War Museum with the captured USS Pueblo, the Pyongyang Metro, and Moranbong Park. These are the sights your guides will take you to; how much time you spend at each is partly negotiable. Independent exploration within designated areas is sometimes possible — ask, but don't push.
