Getting There

Azad Kashmir has no airport, so all arrivals are overland. Most travelers come from Islamabad or Rawalpindi, where buses and minivans depart regularly from Pir Wadhai bus station.

The main route to Muzaffarabad runs via Abbottabad and Mansehra, taking about five hours by road. For the southern districts of Mirpur and Kotli, take the Lahore-Islamabad motorway and exit at Dina or Mangla -- Mirpur is roughly two hours from Islamabad. Rawalakot in Poonch district is accessible via Kohala Bridge, a winding but scenic mountain road that takes around four hours from Islamabad.

Local minivans and Hiace wagons connect the main towns. Roads are mountainous and narrow throughout, so expect slow going and allow extra time during the monsoon season (July-September) when landslides are common.
