Passu is on the Karakoram Highway, 150 kilometres north of Gilgit. The road is sealed all the way and takes three to four hours from Gilgit by jeep, longer in a standard car on the rougher sections. Minibuses and shared jeeps run from Gilgit to Sost (the border town with China) and pass through Passu; the journey costs a few hundred rupees. Private jeep hire from Gilgit is straightforward to arrange and gives more flexibility.
From Karimabad (Hunza), the drive to Passu is about ninety minutes. Most travellers combine Passu with stays in Karimabad and Gulmit. The Karakoram Highway to the Chinese border at Khunjerab Pass passes through Passu; Khunjerab is 130 km further north.
A valid Pakistan visa is required. Foreign nationals are technically required to register with local police in Gilgit-Baltistan, though in practice this is handled by guesthouses. The KKH can be blocked by landslides at any time; check conditions before departure.
