Jhelum rewards the traveler who arrives with patience. The main draw is Rohtas Fort, one of the great military fortresses of the Mughal era — UNESCO-listed and remarkably intact — but the city itself carries its own layers of history: colonial cantonment churches, a Victorian railway bridge over the river, and the ancient Hydaspes plain where Alexander turned back from India.
