Defence Housing Authority (DHA)

DHA — the Defence Housing Authority — is the largest planned residential and commercial area in Karachi, stretching along the southern coast from Clifton toward the airport. Originally established for military personnel and their families, it has expanded into a vast upper-middle-class suburb where the city's most concentrated dining scene, boutique shopping, and expat-friendly amenities are located. The wide, tree-lined roads and relative quiet of DHA's residential sections are a stark contrast to the density of central Karachi.

For visitors, DHA's commercial strips along Khayaban-e-Bukhari, Khayaban-e-Shaheen, and the DHA Phase V/VI areas are the most practical destinations — they contain the majority of Karachi's better restaurants, coffee shops, and retail. The area is most comfortably reached by taxi or ride-hailing app; public transport connections are limited. Phase II and Phase IV are the older areas with more established trees and streetscape; the newer phases further from the city centre become progressively more suburban and spread out.
