Lora Basin and the Hamun-i Lora

The wide salt-flat depression west of town that defines the local landscape

To the west of Nushki the land flattens into the Hamun-i Lora, a broad shallow basin of clay and salt that fills only when the rare flash floods from the surrounding hills bring water down. In a dry year — which is most years — it is a vast white plain studded with scrub and the tracks of camels and pickup trucks.

The basin is part of a larger system of inland-drainage depressions that includes the Hamun-i Mashkel further south. For a traveller it is the defining feature of the Nushki landscape: a horizon so long it bends with the curve of the earth, and skies that go from cobalt at noon to violet at dusk. Best appreciated from the road west of town toward Dalbandin.
