Skardu is a base for some of the greatest mountain country in the world. In and around the town there is Skardu Fort on its perch above the Indus, the carved Manthal Buddha rock at the south edge of the valley, and several lakes within easy reach. From here it's a few hours up wild valleys to Shigar, Khaplu, and ultimately the foot of K2.
