Jericho is about 35 kilometres from Jerusalem, in the West Bank under Palestinian Authority administration. Israeli citizens are not permitted to enter Area A (where central Jericho is located), but foreign tourists can enter freely.
The most common way to arrive from Jerusalem is by shared taxi (sherut) or private taxi from the East Jerusalem bus station or from the Arab bus station at Damascus Gate. The journey takes 30–45 minutes depending on checkpoint wait times. There is also a bus service, though it is less frequent.
From the Allenby Bridge crossing from Jordan, Jericho is the closest Palestinian city — about 10 kilometres — and is often the first stop for travelers entering the West Bank from Jordan.
There is no rail service. Within Jericho, taxis are the practical way to reach sites spread north of the town center. Agree on a price before getting in.
