Jericho sits at 400 metres below sea level in the Jordan Valley — one of the lowest points on earth — and the climate reflects this. Winters (November to March) are warm and pleasant, with temperatures typically 15–22°C. This is easily the best season to visit, and when most pilgrims and tourists come.
Summers are brutal. July and August see temperatures regularly exceeding 40°C, which makes extended sightseeing uncomfortable and potentially dangerous. The archaeological sites and wadi walks are best avoided in high summer unless you start before dawn.
Spring (April–May) and autumn (October–November) are also good. The Jordan Valley stays warm well into autumn, and the date and citrus harvests in October–November mean the local produce markets are at their best.
