An-Nasir Mosque

An-Nasir Mosque is the principal historic mosque of Nablus's old city, built on the foundations of a Crusader church and incorporating elements from it into the Mamluk-era structure. The minaret rises above the surrounding rooflines of the old city and is visible from many points in the valley.

The mosque is an active place of worship and non-Muslim visitors should ask permission and dress appropriately before entering the prayer hall. Even from outside the courtyard, the carved stonework of the entrance portal and the proportions of the structure are impressive. The mosque sits at the heart of the old city and is a natural point of orientation when navigating the souq.

A story
The mosque incorporates columns and architectural fragments from the Crusader-era church that previously occupied the site — a layering of faiths and civilisations typical of Nablus's long history. The minaret, rebuilt and modified over centuries, is one of the city's most recognisable landmarks.
