Port Moresby has a pronounced wet and dry season. The dry season runs from May to October, when humidity drops and the skies are often clear — this is the best time to visit, and the only practical time to walk the Kokoda Track. Temperatures sit comfortably in the high 20s during the day year-round.
The wet season (November to April) brings heavy afternoon downpours and high humidity. Flooding can disrupt roads and some outlying areas become inaccessible. The Kokoda Track becomes extremely difficult in the wet and is not recommended. That said, the city itself remains functional through the rains, and prices and visitor numbers are lower.
APEC week (whenever PNG hosts regional summits) brings significant security and transport disruption. The Hiri Moale Festival, held in September, celebrates the traditional hiri trade voyages of the Motu people with canoe racing, singing, and traditional dress — one of Port Moresby's more accessible cultural events.
