Day Trips

Angeles City's location in Central Luzon makes it a good base for day trips. Volcanoes, historic towns, and duty-free shopping are all within easy reach.

Clark Freeport Zone — 5 km

The closest excursion is barely a trip at all. The former U.S. air base has been transformed into an economic zone with duty-free shopping, casinos, golf courses, and restaurants. Worth a half-day at least.

San Fernando — 17 km

The capital of Pampanga province is best known for two dramatic festivals: the Good Friday Lenten Rites at Easter, when volunteers are crucified in a Passion Play, and the Giant Lantern Festival each December. Year-round you can visit the Archdiocesan Museum, the cathedral, and the lantern factories that produce the biggest lanterns in the world.

Mt. Arayat — 18 km

Start with a picnic in Arayat National Park, where natural waterfalls and three full-sized swimming pools fed by spring water make for a relaxing afternoon. From there you can hike to the summit of this dormant volcano for panoramic views over Luzon.

Mt. Pinatubo — 25 km

The most dramatic day trip in the region. The volcano's devastating 1991 eruption left a stunning crater lake at the summit. You will need a guide for the trek, which takes most of a day — shorter in summer, longer during the rainy season. Not for the unfit. At the base, Pinatubo Spa Town offers mud baths, massages, and hot springs for recovery.
