Baclayon Church

The Baclayon Church, formally the Church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, is the oldest church in Bohol and one of the oldest in the Philippines, built by the Augustinians beginning in 1595. It stands in the town of Baclayon, about 7 km east of Tagbilaran along the coastal road. The church is constructed almost entirely from coral limestone blocks, giving it a texture and colour unlike brick or stone churches elsewhere.

The museum attached to the church holds religious artefacts from the Spanish colonial period — vestments, liturgical silver, old bibles — and is worth a look. The church was badly damaged in the 2013 Bohol earthquake but has been substantially restored. Sunday Mass here draws the local congregation and gives a sense of how these old buildings remain living parts of the community rather than mere monuments.

A story
Baclayon Church was built from coral stone cut from the nearby reef — the same material used in most of the oldest Spanish churches in the Visayas. The builders were Boholano labourers working under Augustinian priests, and many of the stones still bear the chisel marks of people who never converted to the faith for which they were building. An earthquake in 2013 severely damaged the structure, but restoration has since returned much of it.
