Loon Church

The Church of Saint Catherine of Alexandria in Loon, built in 1753, is one of the most striking Baroque churches in the Philippines. Its bell tower is unusually large and separated from the main church building, giving the complex a distinct silhouette against the sky. The church faces a broad plaza that is still the social centre of the town.

The 2013 earthquake damaged the church significantly, but restoration work has been ongoing and the main structure and façade have been repaired. Loon is about 25 km north of Tagbilaran on the road that continues to Punta Cruz, making it a natural stop on the same circuit. The combination of the church, the bell tower, and the square feels like a snapshot of Spanish colonial Philippines.
