Battery Way and Gun Batteries

Surviving coastal gun emplacements from WWII

The coastal gun batteries are among the most visceral reminders of Corregidor's defensive role. Battery Way, equipped with four 12-inch mortars, and Battery Hearn, which mounted the island's largest gun — a 12-inch disappearing rifle — are the most visited of the surviving emplacements. The guns themselves remain in place, rusted and enormous, set into concrete platforms half-consumed by jungle. Walking among them gives a sense of the scale of the island's fortifications and the ferocity of the siege that overwhelmed them.
