Malinta Tunnel

WWII underground headquarters and hospital with sound-and-light show

The Malinta Tunnel is a network of lateral tunnels blasted through the volcanic rock of Malinta Hill in the 1930s. During the Japanese siege of 1942 it served simultaneously as General MacArthur's headquarters, a military hospital for the wounded from Bataan, and a refuge for thousands of Filipino and American soldiers. The main corridor runs 253 metres with 24 lateral branches. A sound-and-light show recreates the wartime siege conditions and is the most atmospheric single experience on the island.

story: > MacArthur's departure from Malinta Tunnel on the night of 11 March 1942 was carried out in total secrecy — he slipped out by PT boat through Japanese-controlled waters. Two months later, on 6 May, the surviving garrison of around 11,000 surrendered: one of the largest surrenders in American military history.
