Kape sa Kanto

Kape sa Kanto ("coffee on the corner") is a small open-fronted cafe that faces the street and keeps the kind of irregular hours that suggest someone opened it because they wanted a place to sit rather than a business to run. Brewed black coffee, cheap, strong, and served in thick ceramic cups, is the main draw — the sort of cup you rarely find in the mall cafes that are otherwise taking over Philippine towns.

The owner is usually around and happy to talk. Snacks run to kakanin (rice cakes) and whatever the nearby market has fresh that morning. Go in the early morning or late afternoon.
