Ayala Museum

The Ayala Museum is Makati's most serious cultural institution and one of the best museums in the Philippines. Its centrepiece is a series of 60 detailed dioramas tracing Philippine history from the pre-colonial era through to independence — a remarkable achievement that makes the broad sweep of the nation's story accessible and engaging even for visitors with little prior knowledge. Each scene is meticulously crafted and lit, and the accompanying text is unusually well written for a museum of this type.

The upper floors house the Gold of Ancestors collection, a spectacular assemblage of pre-colonial gold artefacts excavated from burial sites across the archipelago. Necklaces, ritual vessels, and ornaments demonstrate the sophistication of pre-Spanish Philippine societies and the extensive trade networks that connected them to the rest of Asia. The quality of craftsmanship on some pieces is extraordinary. A separate gallery covers traditional Philippine costumes and textiles from the various ethnolinguistic groups.

The museum is located on the ground floor of the Greenbelt 4 complex, with the main entrance on Ayala Avenue. Admission is charged. Allow at least two hours, more if you want to read the diorama captions carefully. The museum closes on Mondays.
