José Rizal Memorial Trail

Follow the last walk of the Philippines' national hero from Fort Santiago to the Luneta execution site

José Rizal remains the most important figure in Philippine history — the polymath doctor, novelist, sculptor, and ophthalmologist whose two novels are credited with igniting Filipino nationalism against Spanish rule. His life and death are commemorated in a trail that connects the key sites in Manila: the Rizal Shrine in Fort Santiago, where he spent his last night and wrote his final poem "Mi Último Adiós" (My Last Farewell); the route he walked at dawn on December 30, 1896; and the Luneta execution site marked by the monument and the bronze footprints embedded in the pavement.

A visit to Fort Santiago and Rizal Park together takes half a day if done properly. The Rizal Shrine within Fort Santiago holds Rizal's personal effects, letters, and the shoes he wore at his execution. The monument in Luneta contains his remains. A modest, well-curated biography of Rizal makes the historical weight of these sites legible; the more you know about him, the more moving the locations become.
