Mount Isarog is a dormant stratovolcano that rises to 1,966 metres east of Naga City and forms the core of a national park protecting one of the most biologically rich forests in Luzon. The mountain is a serious hiking destination: the summit trail passes through montane rainforest harbouring endemic birds, orchids, and the rare Isarog shrew. The hike to the summit takes a full day and requires a guide, which can be arranged through the DENR (Department of Environment and Natural Resources) office near the park entrance in Panicuason.
The park also has a number of waterfalls accessible on shorter walks — Malabsay Falls and Nabontolan Falls are the most visited and require only a couple of hours from the trailhead. Even if you're not hiking, the drive up to the park boundary through farms and second-growth forest offers views back over the Bicol plain toward Naga.
