Porta Mariae

The Porta Mariae is a ceremonial arch in the heart of Naga City, built in 1910 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the devotion to Our Lady of Peñafrancia. The arch marks the traditional starting point of the procession route that the image travels during the annual September festival. Its name means "Marian Gate" in Latin, and its position in the city centre makes it one of the most recognisable landmarks in Naga.

The arch is a modest but well-proportioned colonial-era structure, and the small plaza around it serves as a gathering point for the faithful during the festival period. Outside of September it's a quiet landmark that gives a sense of how deeply the Peñafrancia devotion is embedded in the city's physical fabric — the route from Cathedral to basilica and back is literally marked in stone.
