Kabankalan is the second largest city in Negros Occidental, sitting in the southern part of the island about two hours by bus from Bacolod. It's a working agricultural city rather than a tourist hub — the surrounding lowlands are blanketed in sugarcane, and the mountains to the east shelter communities of the Bukidnon people. Most travelers pass through en route to the Kanlaon Natural Park or the mountain barangays, but the city itself has a genuine unhurried charm and a useful base of services.
The city center is compact and easy to navigate on foot. The Cathedral of Saint Francis Xavier and the plaza around it are the civic heart of town, and Central Philippines State University adds a student presence that gives the city a livelier cafe scene than its size might suggest. The most compelling reason to stop here is the natural landscape: Mag-aso Falls in the eastern mountains is one of the more accessible waterfalls in the region. Accommodation options are limited but adequate for a night's stop.
