Mangatarem is a town in the southern part of Pangasinan province in the Philippines, its name derived from "mango" and "tarem" (knife). The town sits along the main highway between Dagupan and the Hundred Islands, and is worth a brief stop for its hot springs and its colonial-era church.
The Manleluag Hot Spring National Park lies southeast of town — a natural mineral spring set in forested hills, with a bathing pool and a short forest trail. It is the main reason travellers stop here rather than simply pass through. The St. Raymond of Peñafort Church in the town centre is a solid stone colonial church fronting the public plaza, worth a few minutes on a hot afternoon. If you are passing through, pick up some tupig (grilled rice cakes wrapped in banana leaves) from the roadside stalls — a local speciality.
Mangatarem is a natural stop on the bus route between Manila and the Ilocos coast, or on the way to the Hundred Islands National Park at Alaminos, an hour north.
