Patapat Viaduct

Cliff-hugging coastal viaduct where Luzon's northern highway squeezes between mountain and sea.

Patapat Viaduct is the most memorable road scene in Pagudpud. The elevated highway runs along the cliff above the sea, carrying traffic between Ilocos Norte and Cagayan where the mountains leave almost no flat ground.

Stop only where it is safe, and do not treat the road like a pedestrian promenade. Seen from the right pull-off or in a slow drive, it gives Pagudpud its sharp northern edge: green mountain, blue water, and concrete threading between them.

A story
The viaduct is the practical answer to a difficult coast: steep Cordillera slopes drop straight toward the water, leaving little room for a normal road. In bad weather, landslides can still interrupt travel here, a reminder that the scenery is not just decorative.
