Tarlac City is flat and compact, but the heat makes walking uncomfortable for more than short distances. Tricycles (motorbike with a sidecar) are the main local transport — they cover most of the town centre for 10 to 20 pesos a ride. Jeepneys run fixed routes between the city centre and the outlying barangays.
For the provincial shrines — Monasterio de Tarlac, Capas National Shrine, and Isdaan in Gerona — you will need to hire a tricycle for the day or rent a car. Day-rental of a car with a driver through the hotels or guesthouses typically runs 1,500 to 2,500 pesos. The NLEX and SCTEX toll roads connect Tarlac efficiently to Manila and to Clark, and driving yourself is straightforward if you are comfortable on Philippine highways.
