Al Wakrah Souq

The Al Wakrah Souq is one of the better-preserved and better-restored traditional markets in Qatar — smaller and considerably quieter than Souq Waqif in Doha, which gives it a more genuine atmosphere. The coral-and-gypsum buildings have been restored without being over-sanitized, and the ground-floor shops sell handicrafts, incense, spices, and traditional Qatari items rather than tourist trinkets.

Behind the souq, the working harbour still has dhows and fishing boats moored at the quayside. The view from the waterfront — boats in the foreground, the restored façades beyond — is one of the most photogenic in the Doha region. Come in the late afternoon when the light is good and the temperature drops to something manageable.

A story
Al Wakrah was once one of Qatar's main fishing and pearl-diving towns, with dhow builders working the harbour and divers going out to the oyster beds each summer. The pearl trade collapsed in the 1930s when Japanese cultured pearls flooded the market, but the old buildings survived — and were carefully restored in the 2010s ahead of the 2022 World Cup, which Al Wakrah hosted in part.
