Al Wakrah is a fishing town about 15 km south of central Doha — close enough to reach easily, different enough to feel like somewhere else. For most of Qatar's oil-era growth it was ignored, but the old waterfront quarter has been carefully restored and now has a small, pleasant souq that most Doha tourists miss entirely.
The Al Wakrah Souq is smaller and quieter than Souq Waqif in Doha, which makes it more enjoyable in some ways. The restored coral-and-gypsum buildings house craft shops and a few restaurants, and the dhow harbour behind them still has working boats. It is a good late-afternoon destination when the light is good and the heat is fading. The town also has a public beach, one of the few genuinely accessible ones near Doha.
Al Wakrah sits on the Red Line of the Doha Metro, making it straightforward to reach without a car.
