Al Baik

Cult Saudi fried-chicken chain that started in Jeddah

The most beloved fast food restaurant in Saudi Arabia, a regional fried-chicken chain that for fifty years did not exist outside the Hijaz. The crispy chicken — brined, seasoned with a secret garlic spice rub, fried — is the staple, paired with a punchy garlic sauce that has cult-level devotion.

Branches all over Jeddah, queues at peak meal times, prayer-time pauses. Cheap, family-friendly, and the closest thing to a national dish in modern Saudi Arabia. Try the broasted chicken with shrimp meal — a Jeddah classic.

A story
Al Baik was founded in 1974 in Jeddah by a Yemeni-Saudi entrepreneur, Shakir Abu Ghazalah. For decades the chain refused to expand outside the Hijaz region, which turned eating at Al Baik into a pilgrimage of its own — visitors arriving in Jeddah for the first time would line up at the airport branch before doing anything else.
