Jubail Church

The Jubail Church is an early Christian site discovered during construction of the modern industrial city, dating to around the 4th century AD. It is one of the earliest known Christian structures on the Arabian Peninsula, a reminder that the Gulf coast had a cosmopolitan trading population long before the industrial era. The ruins are modest — low stone walls outlining what was a small church and associated buildings — but the historical resonance is extraordinary. The site is managed by the Saudi Heritage Commission and can be visited, though opening hours are irregular and it is worth confirming access in advance.

A story
The church dates to roughly the 4th century AD and was rediscovered by archaeologists in 1986 during construction work on the industrial city. It is one of the oldest Christian sites in Arabia, evidence that Nestorian Christianity reached the eastern Arabian coast centuries before Islam. The site is preserved in situ and is thought to have served a community of pearl traders or merchants living along the Gulf coast.
