King Salman Park

A large urban park under development in the King Fahd District, being built on the site of the old Riyadh airport. Designed as part of Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 programme to improve the quality of life in the capital, the park incorporates gardens, sports facilities, a performing arts centre, and cultural venues across an area of over thirteen square kilometres.

Parts of the park are already open to the public, with walking paths, sports pitches, and green space that is unusual in a city whose parks have historically been limited. The development is ongoing but the sections already completed give a clear sense of the ambition: Riyadh is trying to create an urban park on a scale that matches its rapid growth. Check the park's social media for current opening hours and accessible sections.

A story
King Salman Park is being built on the site of Riyadh's old international airport, King Khalid International, which was decommissioned in 1983 when the new airport opened to the north. The abandoned airfield sat largely empty for forty years, an oddly large gap in the urban fabric, before the Vision 2030 programme decided to transform it into one of the largest urban parks in the world — covering 13.4 square kilometres, substantially larger than Central Park in New York.
