Getting Around

Singapore has one of the best public transport systems in Asia. For most visitors, the MRT and buses are all you need.

MRT. The Mass Rapid Transit network covers most of the island with six colour-coded lines. Trains run from around 5:30am to midnight, with frequencies of two to three minutes during peak hours. Fares are distance-based, typically S$0.92–S$2.20 per trip. The system is clean, air-conditioned, and reliable. Almost every major sight or neighbourhood is within walking distance of a station.

Buses. An extensive bus network fills the gaps the MRT doesn't reach. Route numbers, live arrival times, and maps are available on the MyTransport.SG app. Night buses run after midnight on key routes at a flat fare of around S$3.

Payment. The easiest option for visitors is to tap in and out with a contactless Visa or Mastercard via the SimplyGo system — no local card needed. Alternatively, buy an EZ-Link card at any station. The Singapore Tourist Pass (one, two, or three days) gives unlimited rides and is worth it if you plan to move around heavily. Bus-to-MRT transfers within 45 minutes attract a discounted fare.

Taxis and Grab. Taxis are metered and honest. Grab is ubiquitous and generally cheaper; download the app before you arrive. Surge pricing applies during rain and rush hour. Do not agree a flat price with a driver before getting in — the meter is always better.

Walking. The historic districts — Chinatown, Little India, Kampong Glam, the Colonial District — are best explored on foot. Streets are well signed and safe at all hours. The heat and humidity are real; start early in the morning or late afternoon, and make use of the underground MRT station concourses to cross busy roads in shade.

Car rental. Not recommended for visitors. Traffic is managed by an Electronic Road Pricing system, parking in the centre is expensive, and the MRT gets you there faster anyway. Singaporeans drive on the left.
