Abhaya Wewa

Large ancient reservoir at the heart of the sacred city

Built by King Pandukabhaya in the 4th century BC, Abhaya Wewa (sometimes called Basawakkulama) is reckoned to be the oldest artificial reservoir in Sri Lanka. It is far smaller than Tissa Wewa but sits in the centre of the sacred city, used for ritual bathing as well as irrigation.

The bund makes for a pleasant short walk, especially in early evening when locals fish and walk dogs along the path. The water mirrors the rear face of the Ruwanwelisaya across the trees — a less photographed but very tranquil view of the great dagoba.
