A bright white modern stupa about 80 metres tall, built between 2010 and 2020 to commemorate the soldiers who died in the long Sri Lankan civil war. It stands on land donated by the Atamasthana (the eight sacred places) of Anuradhapura and was inaugurated by President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
The structure is somewhat controversial — built quickly and on a colossal scale in the middle of an ancient sacred zone — but as a piece of contemporary religious architecture it is striking, and the white dome looks particularly dramatic against the deep blue of the Sri Lankan sky. A visit is worthwhile mostly for the contrast with the slow weathering of the ancient dagobas a few hundred metres away.
