Arugam Bay is about 320 km from Colombo — a journey of eight to ten hours by public transport, or around six hours by private car or taxi. The nearest town with bus connections is Pottuvil, 4 km north of the bay.
The most common route from Colombo goes via Ampara or Monaragala. Buses run from Colombo's Bastian Mawatha terminal to Pottuvil, with one or two direct services per day; otherwise change at Ampara. From Pottuvil, three-wheelers cover the last stretch to the bay in minutes.
From the hill country, the route through Wellawaya and Monaragala is popular — you can break the journey at Ella or Tissamaharama. From Kandy, direct buses to Ampara take around seven hours.
There is no airport near the bay. The nearest airport is at Batticaloa (about 100 km north), with limited domestic flights; Colombo's Bandaranaike International Airport is the practical entry point for most visitors.
