Arugam Bay's main draw is the surf — the three breaks around the bay keep most visitors busy from April through August. Outside the water, the surrounding landscape offers excellent wildlife at Kumana National Park and birdwatching on the Pottuvil Lagoon. The ancient Buddhist site of Muhudu Maha Vihara sits just north of the bay, an atmospheric and barely visited ruin.
