Kumana National Park lies about 30 km south of Arugam Bay and is one of Sri Lanka's most undervisited wildlife reserves. The park covers mangrove lagoons, scrub forest, and open grasslands that support healthy populations of elephants, leopards, sloth bears, crocodiles, and water buffalo. The Kumana Villu — a 200-hectare lagoon at the park's heart — is a critical nesting site for hundreds of species of waterbirds, including painted storks, spoonbills, pelicans, and open-billed storks.
To visit, you'll need to arrange a jeep safari from Arugam Bay — most guesthouses can organise this. The road to the park entrance passes through wild terrain and the journey itself is part of the experience. Early morning and late afternoon drives are best for wildlife. Unlike Yala National Park to the west, Kumana rarely has traffic jams of safari jeeps at leopard sightings — this is as close to a private safari as you'll get in Sri Lanka without spending serious money.
