Coconut Tree Hill

Coconut Tree Hill is a small rocky promontory at the western end of Mirissa Beach, topped with a cluster of palm trees that lean dramatically over the water. It is a short scramble up from the beach, and the view from the top — back across the bay, out over the Indian Ocean, and down to the rocks below — is one of the finest on the south coast.

Sunrise and sunset bring crowds of people with cameras, and for good reason: the silhouette of the palms against the coloured sky is a genuinely beautiful sight. Come in the mid-morning or mid-afternoon if you want it quieter. There is a small admission fee. The path up from the beach is easy enough but gets slippery in wet weather.

A story
Coconut Tree Hill is technically private property belonging to a local family, who began charging a small admission fee after the crowds arrived. The view has appeared on thousands of travel photographs — a cluster of leaning palms silhouetted against the sea and sky — making it one of Sri Lanka's most recognisable images despite being on no official map until recently.
