Beaches

Negombo's beach runs along the western edge of town for several kilometres. It's a working beach as much as a leisure one — fishing boats are hauled up on the sand, nets spread out to dry. The water can be murky near the lagoon mouth, and the current is strong enough to warrant caution when swimming. Stick to the stretch north of Lewis Place for cleaner sand and calmer conditions. It's not Sri Lanka's finest beach, but it's pleasant enough for a sunset walk after a long flight.
