Colombo is 35 kilometres south and easily reached by bus or train in under an hour. The contrast is striking: after the slow pace of Negombo, Colombo's energy and scale can feel overwhelming in a good way. The Pettah market, the Galle Face Green, and the Dutch Hospital precinct are all worth the trip.
