The lagoon stretches north of town and connects to the Dutch Canal system. Hiring a small boat — easily arranged at the harbour or through most guesthouses — gives you a different view of Negombo: the waterway villages, the fishing traps staked out in the shallows, the mangrove channels that the canal cuts through. The lagoon is also the source of much of the crab served in local restaurants. A half-day trip covers the main canal stretch and returns through the fishing harbour.
