Lotus Pond

Small lotus-shaped stone bath in the northern monastic ruins of Polonnaruwa.

The Lotus Pond, or Nelum Pokuna, is a small but memorable detail in Polonnaruwa’s northern ruins. Instead of a plain bathing tank, the stone is carved in nested tiers like a lotus blossom, a piece of 12th-century design that feels almost playful beside the heavier image houses and stupas nearby.

It is not one of Polonnaruwa’s blockbuster sights, but it earns a stop if you are already cycling or driving through the archaeological zone. The pond’s scale is modest; the pleasure is in noticing how much care went into a functional object.
