Trincomalee's climate is opposite to the rest of Sri Lanka. While the southwest is soaked in monsoon rain from May to September, the northeast coast is dry and sunny — this is Trincomalee's high season for beach visitors. The best time to visit is May to September, when the seas are calm, the skies are clear, and the beaches at Uppuveli and Nilaveli are at their best.
The northeast monsoon hits between October and February, bringing heavy rain and rough seas that make swimming and boat trips inadvisable. The town is quieter during this period and many beachside guesthouses in Uppuveli and Nilaveli close or reduce services.
March and April are transitional months with mixed conditions but offer excellent whale watching as blue whales migrate through the waters offshore. Temperatures are warm year-round, typically 28–32°C.
