Trincomalee offers a combination found almost nowhere else in Sri Lanka: genuine Hindu pilgrimage sites of great antiquity alongside some of the island's best beaches, backed by one of Asia's finest natural harbours. The civil war kept tourists away for decades; the place has not yet been overrun and still feels genuinely unhurried.
