Surfing has taken off in Unawatuna, driven largely by local kids who have made the most of the bay's consistent swells. The waves here are modest compared to the east coast, which makes it a reasonable spot for beginners. You can rent boards from locals on the beach for a few hundred rupees. The best conditions tend to be outside the calm season, when the swell picks up, though the reef keeps things from getting too rough inside the bay.
