Getting There

Aleppo's international airport — Aleppo International Airport — was closed during the civil war and has had limited operations since. Check current status before planning to fly in. The most reliable route for most travellers entering Syria is overland from Turkey via the Bab al-Hawa crossing (the main crossing used by aid organisations and the international press during the conflict), which is northwest of Aleppo. From Turkey, buses and shared taxis run from Gaziantep and Antakya.

From Damascus, the road north through Homs to Aleppo (around 360 km) is the main domestic route. The situation on Syrian roads has improved significantly since the fall of the Assad regime in late 2024, but conditions change and it is worth checking current advice before travelling. Travel insurance, a VPN, and up-to-date information from journalists or NGOs who work in the region are all advisable.
