Latakia is a compact city and the centre is walkable. The corniche, the old Roman arch, the regional museum, and the main bazaar streets are all within easy walking distance of each other. For the beaches north of the city and for Ugarit, shared taxis (known as service taxis) are the standard mode of transport — agree on the fare before setting off. Private taxis are available from the main stands near the bus station and the port.
Minibuses serve the surrounding towns and villages, leaving from the central minibus station. They are cheap and run frequently during daylight hours.
