Latakia's main draw is as a base for the surrounding region: the ruins of Ugarit just north of the city, the beaches along the coast, and the Crusader castles inland. The city itself has a pleasant waterfront, a regional museum worth an hour, and a Roman triumphal arch that most visitors walk past without noticing it stands in the middle of the street.
