City God Temple

Hsinchu's City God Temple was built in 1748 and remains the city's most atmospheric religious site. It is a compact, busy Taoist temple with carved beams, colourful frescoes, and a steady flow of worshippers coming to ask the city god for help with ordinary life.

The temple is also the anchor of Hsinchu's best-known food quarter. Stalls and small restaurants around the entrance sell rice noodles, pork ball soup, and meatballs, turning a temple visit into the easiest way to taste the city.
